"Here comes Gunner again." Debbie said as she closed the press on a pair of pants.
"Oh great. What do you think; does he look like he's in a bad mood?" I asked.
"Well...doesn't he always?"
The door to the drycleaner's beeped as Mr. Gunner walked in, the crutches attached to his arms clinking all the way. I walked up front.
"Hello!" I said.
He grunted.
"What's your phone number?" I asked.
He gave it to me and laid a suit on the counter with a thud.
"Okay...two pieces?" I asked.
"Yes." He said.
"When do you want 'em for?"
"Excuse me?"
"When would you like them back?" I asked again.
"Today."
I glanced at the clock. It was 11:00. He always brought his clothes in at the last minute.
"Okay, they'll be ready at 5:00." I stated.
"How much is this going to cost?" He asked.
"Suits are $9.31."
"Well, what about my coupon?" He asked, as if I had known he had a coupon all along. He shoved his coupon in my direction.
"Ok, I'll have to invoice it really quick to find out how much it'll be with the coupon taken off."
I began invoicing as he glared at me.
"Alright, twenty percent discount, from $9.31...is..." I typed as I talked.
"Hopefully you can get it right this time." He interrupted.
"Excuse me?" I said. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I brought a suit in and I had a coupon and the girl couldn't get the math right."
I was silent for a moment, I knew he was lying.
"It's 7.45 for the suit with the coupon taken off."
"I mean, 20% of $10 is..." He raised an eyebrow as he waited for me to answer.
"I'm sorry; I don't know what you're talking about." I replied.
"$2.00. It's $2.00."
"Oh, well, yes, I know that but the price for your suit is 9.31. The coupon was for 20%. The final price is $7.45."
"Ok. I'm going to check when I come pick it up that you did it right."
"Sir, there is no way that the math could have been done wrong. The computer does it all." I finally said.
"Well." He grunted.
"The girl that dealt with you last time was Emma, if you'd like to talk to her then I can go get her."
"Well, no, I just think that you ought to be able to do basic math."
"Ok...Well, these will be ready at 5:00. Here's your quick claim."
"What did you say the price was again?" He asked as he pulled out a pen.
"$7.45."
"It better be the same when I come back."
"It's already invoiced; it's not going to change."
"Last time the girl told me $2.00, and when I came back it was more than that." He said.
"That's not possible. The only way that could have happened is if you added something to your order." I replied.
"Well, I didn't."
"Would you like to talk to the manager about it?"
"No, I'm just telling you that you should watch what you're doing."
"I've been as careful as possible. You were right here. I invoiced the order in front of you and added your coupon." I said as I initialed the coupon right there in front of him.
"What does that stand for?" He asked as I wrote.
"Those are my initials." I glared at him. It was none of his business. "If you have a problem, I can go get the manager right now. She's just in the back, only a few steps away."
"No, I don't need to talk to the manager about it. I'll just check that everything is in order when I get back." He said.
He slowly walked out the door. I went back to the presses with Debbie.
"Well?" She said.
"Yep, he was in a bad mood." I replied.
